We have a pretty pair of old earrings in the shape of a small basket filled with small natural pearls mounted in 14K Gold. These are lovely, handcrafted antique pieces of jewelry, symbolizing abundance and prosperity. It was a wedding gift typical of the Sicilian tradition. The groom gives it to the bride as a promise for a rich family. The gold is twisted, embossed and chiseled. Hundreds of tiny beads are carefully strung together. 14 carat gold (touchstone tested). Mid 19th century from Sicily. An old hallmark is present on the hooks. They are in perfect condition. Small natural pearls were fished by the Sicilians on the eastern Mediterranean coasts and also used for jewelry since the Middle Ages.
