Van Cleef & Arpels: the Alhambra, the emblematic

Van Cleef & Arpels: the Alhambra, the emblematic

Van Cleef & Arpels, founded in 1896 by Alfred Van Cleef and his brother-in-law Charles Arpels, is without context one of the biggest names in jewelry, whose history you can find in our article “Van Cleef & Arpels technicality at the service of fine jewelry”. Focus on the Alhambra collection, one of the House's signatures.

The Alhambra line, the iconic

Van Cleef & Arpels created the Alhambra collection in 1968. The first jewel was a yellow gold long necklace representing a flower or a four-leaf clover in a stylized way. The origin of this motif is undoubtedly multiple: the House associates it with the symbol of luck (the four-leaf clover motif can be found in the archives from 1920) and with the taste of Jacques Arpels who used to offer to his collaborators, but we can also see the inspiration of motifs similar to those present in the gardens of the Alhambra in Granada.
Celebrities have adopted it! Grace of Monaco and Elisabeth Taylor, or even the character of Gossip Girl, the very chic Lily Van der Woodsen.

Today, the Alhambra motif is present in several forms… Variations in earrings, chokers, long chains, bracelets and watches have appeared.
More than 50 years later, the Alhambra collection is one of the brand's bestsellers.
