Colored diamonds continue their sales records!
The diamonds pink or blue break all records at auction, sometimes reaching more than a million euros per carat.
After the blue diamond sold for nearly $44 million last month, this pink diamond sold for 10,8 million during Christie's Hong Kong sale on November 27, 2023. It is a cushion cut diamond Fancy Intense Type IIa, internally Flawless
of 15,48 carats mounted on a ring set with white diamonds.
The “Pink Supreme” was part of a sale that totaled $63 million and included blue and pink diamonds.
As the article in Le Point by Hervé Dewintre points out (La Couleur à la Cote, 30/11/23), Violaine d'Astorg, who heads the Jewelry department at Christie's France, confirms "with a notable acceleration over the past 3 years, particularly for Pinks and blues […these colored diamonds] are identified as safe havens.”
Other diamonds have attracted enormous attention.
The Wittelsbach diamond is linked to the history of the Habsburg family. In 2008, this 35,56 carat diamond was sold at auction by Christie's for £16,4 million.
Since then, sales of blue and pink diamonds have continued to break records.
In May 2016, the Oppenheimer Blue, a 14,62-carat stone, was sold for €51,9 million at Christie's, while Chinese jeweler Chow Tai Fook acquired the Pink Dream for €63,3 million. 'euros at Sotheby's in April 2017. These records demonstrate the rarity of these stones. In fact, only one diamond in 100 can be certified pink.
The Royal Blue, a 17,61-carat bright blue and perfectly pure diamond, was sold at Christie's Geneva for more than $44 million, or 2,4 million per carat.
