The different sizes of diamonds

The different sizes of diamonds

When we observe a diamond, our eye is immediately drawn to its shape, the shape of the cut which is an integral part of the famous “4Cs of the diamond” (the 4 criteria of the diamond): the CUT. Several sizes exist for this exceptional gem.

Diamond Cut Shapes

The brilliant round diamond

It is the most widespread waist shape and therefore also the most sold. More than 75% of jewelry on the market is set with a round brilliant diamond, but it is also the most expensive shape. The modern brilliant round cut has 56 facets plus the table, i.e. 57 facets.

The facets have particular names specific to the diamond:

For the crown: 8 table corners or bezels, 8 stars and 16 halefis.

For the breech: 8 pavilions and 16 halfis.

The princess cut diamond

The princess shape is very popular and is the second best-selling cut shape after the round brilliant.

It is square or slightly rectangular in shape with sharp angles. The princess cut offers a very beautiful shine and it is found set on rings, earrings or pendant.

The cushion-cut diamond

This size has been very popular in recent years. This cushion cut consists of 58 to 64 facets and it has slightly rounded corners which gives it a shape similar to that of a pillow.

The emerald cut diamond

The emerald cut is very often set on an engagement ring. Its waist shape is identical to the most common waist shape of theemerald (the green colored gem), hence its name.

The emerald diamond has a large table, so it is recommended to choose a very good color and a very good clarity of an emerald cut diamond: they must be very good because with this shape the inclusions could be visible to the eye for purities lower than VS2.

The Radiant Cut Diamond

This size is usually rectangular in shape but you can also find square radiants. The color of the radiant diamond must be at least G or H in order for the stone to be pleasing to the eye. One will mainly find in the trade a radiant diamond set on an engagement ring.

The pear-shaped diamond

She is also very popular. The pear cut diamond combines the characteristics of the round cut and the marquise cut to create a very elegant cut resembling a teardrop.

The pear-shaped diamond is a very good choice to set it on a engagement ring or mount it as a pendant.

The oval cut diamond

The oval diamond is an interesting alternative to the round shape. With its elongated shape, the oval cut exudes great natural elegance. An oval shape looks larger visually than other sized shapes, more so when crimped on a ring, it makes it possible to refine and lengthen the fingers. An oval diamond will be much cheaper than a round brilliant, it is a very good choice for those who have a smaller budget.

The heart-shaped diamond

Its geometric heart shape symbolizes love and passion. Many choose a heart diamond for an engagement ring. But you can also offer it set on a pendant for a birthday or for Valentine's Day. The heart diamond generally has 56 to 60 facets. When well cut and well proportioned, the heart cut has a lot of shine and fire.

The marquise cut diamond

It is a very elegant size with its 2 points on each side. A marquise cut appears larger than a round brilliant diamond for equal weight because this marquise shape is very elongated, moreover the price of a marquise is much more affordable than a brilliant. The marquise diamond has 56 to 60 facets, depending on how it is cut.

triangular cut diamond

This triangular cut is most often used to support a center diamond on an engagement ring, for example. We place on the ring 2 triangle diamonds on each side of the diamond of center. It can also be set on a pendant.

Finally, some large houses have developed their own size (Cut) such as the Mellerio size known as Meller or LVMH with its LV size.
