Filigree, a tradition of old and vintage jewelry

58 Facettes

DDiscovered in Egypt and over 7 years old, filigree is one of the most attractive and precious techniques in goldsmithing. This technique, which requires a delicate process, is only mastered by very few craftsmen in the world, located mainly in Portugal, India and Russia.

One of the most beautiful techniques in jewelry

Filigree is a technique that consists of intermingling and welding very fine and precious metals to obtain pieces of goldsmithery similar to lace giving this embroidery effect. These metals used are gold and silver, so they allow to have this finesse thanks to their elasticity when they are heated. Thus, with one gram of gold we can have several meters of wire. But there are more specifically two types of watermark. The first, the application watermark, consists of putting very fine threads on the goldsmith's piece in order to obtain embroidery effects added to this same piece. The second is the integration watermark, which consists of creating the jewel entirely made of watermark. A technique that then requires greater mastery, skills and very in-depth experience. As can be seen with this diamond white gold lace ring or this yellow gold filigree bracelet.

Thanks to this totally marvelous technique, many filigree jewels have emerged, unleashing all the creativity of artisans drawing inspiration from various backgrounds. Today, filigree jewelry is also worn by the biggest stars. This brings even more modernity to these jewels which have respected traditions for thousands of years.
