2023, an anniversary year for iconic watches

2023, an anniversary year for iconic watches

The houses of high quality watchmaking are keen to celebrate the anniversaries of their iconic models to reinvent them by using new materials or by adding new complications, or quite simply by reinterpreting them so that their memory lives on in the minds of enthusiasts and other collectors .

We were therefore able to observe in 2022 a multitude of watchmaking celebrations such as at Audemars Piguet which celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Royal Oak, Breitling which celebrated the 70th anniversary of its Navitimer, Patek Philippe and the 90th anniversary of the Calatrava.

2023 will not escape the anniversaries of certain legendary watches.

2023, double anniversary at Rolex

A major anniversary is coming in 2023, that of the Submariner, produced by Rolex in 1953 offering brand enthusiasts water resistance to 100 meters. It was at the time a technical feat for scuba diving, a sport-recreation which was beginning to take off at that time. Specialists are impatiently awaiting what the 70th anniversary model of this emblematic watch will look like…

In 2023, Rolex will also celebrate the 60th anniversary of its “Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph” watch, better known as the Daytona, a model this time a tribute to motor racing circuits.

Other watchmaking anniversaries

Another tribute to the world of circuit racing,  TAG Heuer also hints at a new anniversary piece for 60 years of Carrera history which begins in 1963 when Jack Heuer, the brand's founder, discovered a Mexican race: the Carrera Panaremicana.

It was to pay homage to this famous race that the watchmaker created the Carrera chronograph, worn by the greatest drivers to this day. Oldest model in collection at TAG Heuer, there is no doubt that the brand will be able to celebrate this anniversary with dignity

Let's also keep an eye on the anniversary of the highly watchmaking brand Blancpain, which is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Fifty Fathoms. First watch designed for diving, waterproof and perfectly readable. Used by French combat swimmers and made popular by Commander Cousteau who wore it in 1954 in the film “Le Monde du Silence” (Louis Malle), it has remained legendary ever since. It is therefore a year of celebration for Blancpain which will present a series of exclusive models and in reference to the 1953 model for the occasion.
