Gorgeous and thick four-layered agate cameo, representing a lapidary feat. The bottom layer is in gray chalcedony, the complexion is in calcite, the garland of vine leaves and the head of the panther in brown chalcedony and the bunch of grapes in calcite. The subject represents Ariadne (Ariadne), the young wife of Bacchus, in bust, in profile to the left. The young Cretan princess is recognizable by the bunches of grapes adorning her hair and the panther skin spread over her shoulder. The invoice is of neo-classical style in force since the second half of the 18th century. This cameo strikes both by its color and by the high quality of execution, the artist having succeeded in giving both relief and sensitivity to his subject.
This cameo is mounted in a very pretty gold brooch mount from the romantic era, decorated with very fine carving.
