Old coral cross necklace in 18 karat (750 thousandths) yellow gold. The necklace and its pendant are decorated with coral beads. Each pearl trio is connected by delicate braided gold chains. The cross is crafted in millegrain and embellished with a coral bead at the ends. The clasp is a fine and elongated ratchet box. Religious jewel, probably from the South of France, Mediterranean basin, mid-19th century.

Gemological point: coral is a gem of organic origin. Only the calcareous branched trunks of certain corals are used in jewelry. Its color is due to organic pigments close to carotene: varying from blood red to white, passing through “angel skin” pink. For a long time it was traditional to offer coral necklaces to young children to protect them from disease. Coral was reputed to be protective, especially in the Mediterranean basin, in Italy and Corsica in particular.
