Art Deco onyx cufflinks
Pair of Art Deco cufflinks in white gold and silver-plated metal, adorned with sugar loaf cut onyx in a delicately serrated bezel setting. French work from the beginning of the 20th century.
The buttons are in their original box "The Sheffield Plate & Co, 14 rue de la Pépinière, Paris".
Sheffield Plate & Co. was known to market jewelry in "Sheffield" plating, the fusion of thin silver foil on copper, a technique invented in the town of the same name in England at the end of the 18th century.
Onyx is a black chalcedony which means "nail" in ancient Greek. It takes its name from a myth citing Cupid and Venus.
