An iconic watch: The Tank from Cartier

THE HOUSE Cartier has always been able to establish itself in watchmaking with very recognizable and atypical shapes. The Tank is one of those that breaks the codes of basic watch design with its rectangular case, inspired by First World War military tanks. All this has made this watch propelled to the rank of iconic watch.

It was marketed in 1919 and has since featured various materials, colors and settings, managing to remain faithful to its original elegance.

The history of the Tank Cartier

Louis Cartier was fascinated by the tanks produced in the Renault factories, so he set out, with this idea in mind, to design a watch model inspired by the shape of the tank. The idea of the Tank was born. The creation of this watch pays homage to steel monsters, Cartier is therefore inspired for its case by a tank seen from above, by its square shape, surrounded by two side stretchers (imitation of tank tracks), with timer in railway and Roman numerals. It is not just a watch model like the others that sees the light of day, but a timeless object that defies the years and enjoys immediate success.

In the detail of the Tank

Recognizable everywhere by its unique design, the Tank is defined by its leather strap, its square case caught between two stretchers which stretch it to a rectangle, its mineral crystal, its sword-shaped hands made of blued steel, its Roman numerals, its railway timer, its mechanical hand-wound movement with a power reserve of approximately 40 hours (a mechanism first signed Jaeger Le Coultre)… And of course, the sapphire cabochon as a winding mechanism , a distinctive sign of all watches Cartier Tank. This watch, in addition to all its characteristics, is waterproof up to 30 meters from its first model, this makes the Tank an armored watch, designed to withstand everything, sports activities as well as combat, indeed, it wears its name.

Cartier has integrated the bracelet attachments into the case, as if to make them merge into one another, to make the timepiece a unique object encompassing the wrist. Cartier therefore offers a watch that is also a bijou and which is worn as a beautiful accessory despite the meaning of it a little less glamorous.
