Chanel No. 5, from fragrance to Haute Joaillerie collection

The iconic Chanel No. 5

A tribute to perfume

In 2021, the world celebrated the 5th anniversary of one of the most iconic perfumes ever created: Chanel N°5. This perfume, which has now transcended the world of fragrances, inspired a High Jewelry collection bearing its name: the “N°123 Collection”. Imagined by the director of Chanel’s Jewelry design studio, Patrice Leguéreau, this collection includes 1921 pieces including rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces and brooches that pay homage to this iconic perfume that launched the house’s glory, propelling it to worldwide fame. Launched in XNUMX by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, this perfume was designed to be a symbol of femininity and modernity. Its composition, a complex blend of floral and woody notes, revolutionized the perfume industry, and shines today in jewelry creations.

A symbolic collection

In this collection, the Chanel jewelry reinterpret the sensuality and fragrances of the famous perfume that inspired them, using only diamonds, colorless or yellow, to recreate the color code and components of the perfume. The centerpiece of the collection is a necklace that echoes the lines of the perfume bottle, set with a 55.55-carat emerald-cut diamond, accompanied by diamonds of various sizes. Other elements that echo the perfume are also present, including the cuts of the stones: the pear cut, which recalls the delicate petals of the May rose and jasmine, two key ingredients of Numéro 5, and the emerald cut, otherwise known as the “rectangle cut” cut, which reproduces the iconic shape of the perfume bottle. In addition, some jewelry represents the number in an illustrative way, by including the number 5 itself.

Why is the number 5 so iconic at Chanel?

First of all, the 5 represents harmony and graphic richness; it embodies different symbolic encounters: those of the curve and the line, of freedom and rigor and finally the encounter of the feminine and the masculine.

For Coco Chanel, the number 5 also had 5 more personal meanings:

  • 5 as the 5th sign of the zodiac, his own,
  • 5 as his favorite day to present his creations,
  • 5 as his lucky number,
  • 5 is the lucky number according to Chanel,
  • 5 like the 5 fingers of the hand, the actors of creation.

Through this collection, Patrice Leguéreau decided to bring together two niche sectors, that of High Jewelry and Perfumery. This idea, previously envisaged by Coco Chanel herself, had never been realized during her lifetime. Since 2021, these jewels have positioned themselves as a celebration of Coco Chanel's legacy, a fusion of two excellent crafts, as well as a tribute to femininity, one of the fundamental values of the house, created by a woman, for women. Just like the perfume that inspired them, these jewels are intended for the modern, sophisticated and daring woman, and are now adapted into a Jewelry collection, at more accessible prices.
